I saw a recent job listing that stated long hours for low pay with little to no leave. I got really pissed at it.
Is adequate work life balance and leave such a terrible thing to ask for?

It's hard when you don't have a choice about the kind of jobs you can work at. That usually happens to people with little relevant work experience.
The first few jobs will suck. I had to slog through my early jobs with a grin. But eventually, you will gather enough experience and skills to pick a job role you like.
